Bordeaux is one of the most popular wine producing regions -- and one of the most popular wines in the world. It is a favorite with average wine drinkers as well as wine geeks and connoisseurs. Because of the vast area it covers, the diversity of its soils, its mix of climates and combinations of grape varieties, Bordeaux produces a very varied range of wines – dry white, sweet and botrytised white, red, rosé, clairet and sparkling wines as well as Fine Bordeaux, a brandy made from distilled wine.The range of flavors in the Bordeaux wines means that almost anyone can find a perfect match. It also means that the classification system can be difficult to understand. A full 65% of vineyard owners bottle wines from their own grapes. Three quarters of all the wine produced in this region comes from independent wineries. The remainder entrust the task to the 53 cooperative wineries. Each year there is an average of 850 million bottles of wine produced in Bordeaux. And there are those who would argue that it is not enough...
